This year's Honoring Our Vets featuring Rockie Lynne

Courier-Tribune - 9/8/2018

Sept. 08--ASHEBORO -- A rising country music star will highlight the Fifth Annual Honoring Our Veterans Cruisin' on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Rockie Lynne, an Army veteran from Statesville, has three top 40 hits and has appeared on "Good Morning America" and "Fox & Friends" as well as graced the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. He's perhaps best known for his tributes to the military and is a regular on USO tours.

Lynne is scheduled to perform at the Honoring Our Veterans Cruisin' in the parking lot of Wayne Thomas Chevrolet, 1400 E. Dixie Drive, Asheboro. He'll be on stage from 10-11:30 a.m. and again from 1-2:30 p.m.

The event opens at 8 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony and the Pledge of Allegiance by the Southwestern Randolph High School Jr. ROTC.

Show car registration is from 8-11 a.m. and a silent auction will run from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

There will also be tickets for sale for a 50/50 drawing, with the winner to be revealed at 2:50 p.m.

Again this year, there will be a drawing for a GM crate motor as well as a reproduction of a Texaco gas pump.

Veterans will gather in front of Marshalls at 11:15 a.m. for the veterans' march, led by Drill Sgt. Gary Davis. All World War II veterans will be asked to go to the stage. A moment of silence will honor fallen veterans.

The National Anthem will be played at noon and vintage planes from the N.C. Aviation Museum will fly over. That will be followed by Judge Rob Wilkins of the Randolph County Veterans Council, who will speak on the struggles of local veterans.

All proceeds from the event go to the Veterans Council to help needy vets. Last year's Cruisin' raised $19,000 for veterans and organizers say they've had a good start for this year. The first event raised some $5,000 and a total of $60,000 has been collected during the first four years.

"We've exceeded expectations," Wayne McGrady said during an organizational meeting. "We want to continue to grow."

After the playing of "Taps," the show cars will line up to cruise to the N.C. Aviation Museum at the Asheboro Regional Airport.
