Stanford House to honor local veterans at ceremony

Gainesville Daily Register - 11/9/2017

Nov. 08--The Stanford House will add five more people to its Wall of Honor during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday.

Stanford House Executive Director Kathi Kirby Husereau said Michael Ance, Bill Beach, Reynolds Ansley, Bill Riley and Jack Russell will be the five veterans added during the free event at 401 W. Garnett St. in Gainesville.

She said this is the fourth time the senior center will add people to the wall.

The Wall of Honor was unveiled in April 2016 during a kickoff event to the Medal Of Honor Host City festivities. It features veterans who attend the Stanford House and those who have died.

"This is an opportunity to honor our veterans," Husereau said.

Ray Fletcher will be the keynote speaker for the senior citizen activity center's hour-long ceremony, according to Husereau.

Fletcher, who is the Cooke County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator, retired from the U.S. Air Force as a senior master sergeant in 2003 after serving 22 years.

"Veterans Day is to honor all veterans," Fletcher said. "It shouldn't be a day of mourning and sadness. It should be a day of celebration for veterans. Veterans are everywhere in our lives, and most don't want and don't seek recognition and don't require it. They do what they do at a very young age for the most part because they feel it needs to be done."

At 5:45 p.m. Saturday, the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department will host a Veterans Day program at the large pavilion in Leonard Park, 1000 W. California St.

The event, which is on Veterans Day, features the VFW color guard, patriotic music selections from the Gainesville High School Choir, remarks from Mayor Jim Goldsworthy, guest speaker Tim Cortes, recognition of veterans from past wars and a fireworks show, according to a news release from the city.

The event is free of charge, and the public is invited to attend.
