Mental Health First Aid project expansion continues

Dunn County News - 3/16/2017

The Dunn County Mental Health Improvement Project with Arbor Place Inc. is at the midpoint of its three-year grant and is still progressing with movement in our community toward increasing knowledge of behavioral health issues and identifying services for referrals.

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) project started in October 2015 with a targeted population of the course being community members who either work or live in Dunn County. That population has now expanded. As of February, the Advancing Wellness and Resilience Education (AWARE) grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has given the Dunn County project the OK to offer the training into surrounding counties.

The project will now be able to provide the free course to more community members in the northwest region of Wisconsin, offering free education about mental health issues and how to help someone in a crisis. The MHFA course offers education about signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, psychosis, and substance abuse issues as well as assistance in guiding someone through a mental health crisis.

To learn more, contact Sheli Jo Metzger, project coordinator, at Arbor Place Inc. at 715-235-4537, ext. 224 or smetzger@arborplaceinc.com. Or visit the MHFA website for available courses at http://smetzger3.wixsite.com/dunncountymhfa. Courses are scheduled for community members as an open course and for businesses as a closed course for their employees.
