Frontier Health Offering Suicide Prevention Training For Public, Workplaces

The Greeneville Sun - 2/13/2017

Would you know how to prevent someone from committing suicide?

Frontier Health is offering training for this basic life-saving skill called QPR (question, persuade and refer) training.

According to Fronter Health officials, the program is designed like first aid or CPR training.

Class participants are taught how to recognize suicide risk factors and learn how to keep at-risk individuals safe, including how to access effective medical and behavioral health care for them.

"Regardless of your background, you can make a positive difference in the life of someone you know who may be considering suicide," said Cicely Alvis, a licensed clinical social worker who serves as the site director for Frontier Health's Crisis Stabilization Unit.

In the classes, role playing scenarios are used to help participants recognize warning signs and increase their confidence in discussing and asking about suicidal thoughts, Alvis explained.

QPR training is available to workplaces throughout the region, she added.
